Subject vs Direct vs Indirect Object Breakdown

  • Subject (S): Performs the verb → Tom gave Mary a book.
  • Direct Object (DO): What is being given/acted on → Tom gave Mary a book. (What was given? A book)
  • Indirect Object (IO): To whom it is given → Tom gave Mary a book. (To whom? Mary)
  • Alternative Prepositional Form: Tom gave a book to Mary.
